Words at the Black Swan Group Meeting
Sunday 2nd June 2013, 3.30 - 5pm

This is an open group for anyone interested in responding in words to the exhibitions at Black Swan Arts gallery.

The format is that each one-and-a-half-hour session is led by an experienced professional and we have award winning poet Rose Flint for the next, on Sunday June 2nd. There's a chance to reflect and share as well as focused guidance, and participants have hugely enjoyed the opportunity to develop their skills as well as to participate creatively in the cultural and community life of Black Swan Arts.

Anyone with an interest in creating word response to visual art is welcome to come along.

KIDSART! Spring half-term holiday workshops
Spring into half-term, with some fresh and creative activities for young people, happening in the Round Tower.

Kidsart! workshops are for making cool stuff... and this half-term we'll be doing some very scary gardening, creating bats, butterflies and dragons to turn into fridge magnets, making UFO's with their own aliens, and last but not least, animating our own short films.

The 11th annual Black Swan Arts Open exhibition is now open!
The winners of The Black Swan Arts Prize and The Bax Family Fine Art Prize have been announced - read more to see the full details.

This year we are delighted to be working with Artolo who are awarding the incredible prize of a solo show in Bath for the artist whose work is selected by public vote over the course of the exhibition. To choose the artist YOU would like to win the People's Choice prize (supported by Artolo) please come along to the gallery and cast your vote.

With thanks to our respected panel of judges we have an outstanding selection of artwork on show, encompassing a diverse range of practices including painting, sculpture, ceramics, glass, print and photography.

Nuno Felt Shawl I - 2 Day Workshop
Round Tower - Saturday 13th - Sunday 14th April 2013, 10am- 4.30pm each day

Nuno felt was first developed in 1994, and since then has been taken up by feltmakers and textile artists around the globe. During this workshop with Frome-based feltmaker Gladys Paulus you will learn how to incorporate fabric and wool together to create a newly constructed fabric with characteristics quite different from traditional felt.

The People’s Choice Award has been given to Ben Baldwin (17 at Downside School) for his astonishing portrait ‘Francesca’

Inspired by the alchemy of the ancient feltmaking process, Gladys’s work explores the notion of transformation. By adding water, heat, soap and friction, loose wool fibres become a versatile fabric which is sculpted into tactile forms.

Black Swan Arts Young Open - Competition Winners & Prize Givers
On Saturday morning the Young Open Art Exhibition 2013 opened at the Black Swan. Over 120 children, parents and local artists poured into the gallery at noon for the announcement of the winners. The judging had been earlier in the day, with Pippa Goldfinger, the Mayor of Frome, Celia Bennett, portrait artist and Jane Worrall, Black Swan Trustee, performing the unenviable task of choosing just 12 prize winners from the almost 200 pieces of work on show.

Black Swan Arts Young Open Competition 2013
Open from 12 noon on 23rd February to 9th March 2013

Over 150 pieces of art, sculpture, weaving, metal work, photography, collage and other media, will be on display throughout the Black Swan Galley and many of the works will be for sale, all at reasonable prices.

The opening hours have been extended to 5pm, so that young people can come down after school to have a look around; take part in the Quiz and try being a Magnetic Curator. There is a People’s Choice Award, and voting costs just £1 with the chance to win the ’Black Swan Experience’ of £70 worth of vouchers.

Edventure are now based at the Round Tower
Edventure is a platform and school for community entrepreneurship, and young adults who want to make their ideas happen. We are working to create educational community spaces and projects that provide diverse young people with opportunities for co-working, learning, creating and making.

We are really excited to now be based in the Round Tower and are busy planning plenty of workshops and events for the coming months, as well as developing the Tower as a co-working space for young adults. We are still taking bookings for evenings and week-end events so do get in touch.

Black Swan Arts - February 2013 Artist on a Plinth
Amanda Bee

Amanda is a painter living and working in Frome. She is particularly inspired by the Cornish coastline which she visits several times a year. She works mainly with mixed media, mixing collage with hand-printing techniques and painting. Her work is about re-imagining the landscape; sharing her personal and emotional response to the environment. She always sketches from life, using the drawings as starting points for her work. Hand printing and collage allow her to explore a subject freely with the initial drawings developing into abstraction.

Amanda works from a studio at the Silk Mill in Frome. She is also a Lead Tutor for Arts, Media and Publishing at Somerset Skills & Learning, where she runs a variety of courses for adults across Somerset.

Belinda Brownlee

Belinda is a ceramicist working on the Mendips, in Priddy. Her main interest is the decoration of pots; using of colour combinations and mark making.

She also uses digital photographic techniques to capture the marks on her pots to develop into two-dimensional designs.

Cath Bloomfield is inspired by the natural shapes of plants, the colour and the tactile qualities of textile design and uses life drawing as a reference for her work.

Artist Statment
I move between mixed media and collagraphs. Using contrasting materials I layer and build boards and cut stencils for printing, I love colour and mark-making and at present I am working on a series of beetle plates.

Black Swan Arts - October 2012 Artist on a Plinth
Alex Relph


Alex Relph is a sculptor, metalworker and designer who moved to Frome from East London in 2004.

He now runs a thriving metalwork business from a farm in Hemington just outside town. When not designing and producing architectural metal work for private and commercial clients, Alex enjoys creating bespoke furniture and abstract sculpture to commission and for exhibitions. He has also been selected to carry out many successful public art commissions.

Carol Denn


French and American artist Carol Denn comes to the Black Swan Plinth for August.

Carol was born in Yorktown, Virginia, USA and made Frome her home some years ago. Her oil paintings on linen canvas create different visual planes by mixing hand painted personal and invented narratives with flat stencil, collage and mixed media with themes relating to nature, memories, retro images, Americana and childhood.

Venetian jesters, Georgian beauties and Edwardian gentleman were led up the drive by flaming torches and Chinese lanterns, through the garden and past the huge house lantern, which was the star of this year’s Frome Carnival and kindly given by Home In Frome.
